17 months and 10 boxes of clothes later....

Our little monkey is not so little anymore...

Weighing in at approximately 21 lbs, Peyton is now 30" long and has a 19" head. She is finally proportional with her head. :) Over the past 17 months we have boxed up 10 boxes of newborn, 0-3, 3-6,6-9, 9-12 month clothing. We are so blessed that we only had to pay for a small fraction  of the clothing she has been wearing. Its now carefully marked and stored in the garage for a future baby (not in the works by the way).

Easter this year was a little more exciting. We participated in not one but three easter egg hunts. The first one she picked up one egg and ran around with it. The second one one she picked up a few more and when she got to the egg with pennies in it she promptly stopped and played with it. The third Easter egg hunt was more successful but she decided to pick up the eggs and then hide them again. So smart.

Then (2012) and Now (2013):

The Easter dress was more effective this year as well. She still isn't a fan of hair bows or headbands but we are getting to wear our dresses longer.

Then (2012) and Now (2013):

And we were able to sit through an entire church service this year because we choose the balcony seating in Three Forks and she was able to play with her toys and sing along and walk around without disturbing others. There was one scary moment where she tried to throw a play golf ball over the edge onto an unsuspecting congregation. Luckily we stopped her just in time.

We are starting to enjoy playtime immensely. Its to the point where she will actually throw a temper tantrum when its time to come inside.

The drawing and letters are mine obviously...

Gramma Hoot also sent us a little motorized 4-wheeler so that she can compete with the boys next door on the hill races. It only took her a week or so before she found the button that makes the bike "go". She now drives around the culdesac with me walking behind her.

Peyton also likes to go to school and visit Daddy and the school kids. She has gotten in on a couple of games of basketball which is really a joy to watch.

But most of all I have noticed more and more that our little monkey is becoming a little girl. With attitude.

We are so blessed by her goofy, and often "spirited" nature, that we can't wait to see what she learns to do each passing day.

My sweet baby turned 1 on November 29.
We had a whole week of celebrations:

Opened lots of presents and cards!

Blew out a candle with Daddy's help!

Enjoyed a few cupcakes...

Took a few baths to remove said cupcakes...

Got dressed up to see Santa Claus..

One Amazing Year with Peyton

In one short year our little peanut went from this:
To this:
And then this:

While her actual birthday is November 29th, we are making it a week long celebration!
We are celebrating her birthday this weekend with her Nana. Next weekend we will celebrate with her maternal grandparents, aunts, uncles and surrogate family!

What have we learned this year?
* Spit up rags are necessary and must be placed strategically around the house.
* You think you want your daughter to roll-over/sit-up/roll around/ crawl/walk... until it happens and then you spend days baby proofing things you didn't know you needed baby proofed.
* Technology, like many other things, is extremely helpful in child rearing... until your child realizes that Sesame Street comes from your phone/laptop/tv and you have to wrestle it away from her at nap time.
* Car trips can either be extremely enjoyable or a "terrible-horrible-no good-very bad" idea... Our child got so excited about her week at church camp at Flathead Lake with mom that she didn't want to leave. She screamed the entire 4.5 hours home. I thought about sending her back on the bus.
* Food is very very exciting... but at some point your child could develop a healthy love of fruits and vegetables and reject the idea of noodles and meat. The second it goes in there is a pause, then a terrible face, and finally everything comes back out. The second and third attempts ended the same way.
* Teaching your child to play with animals gently is a very good idea... it might be good to teach her to play with other children the same way. You know, so she doesn't try to claw their eyes out.
* Trimming fingernails is not fun... but necessary.
* The saying "sleep when baby sleeps" is nearly impossible but also necessary. Even if its only 15 minutes.
* Just because your child has never been around, personally seen or had a "temper tantrum" demonstrated to them... doesn't mean they can figure out how to throw one all by themselves.

There are so many "momservations" that I could post here but we can save those for another day.

Everyday Peyton learns something new that just astounds us. One day she just started waving at people. The next day she was clapping her hands for everything. Last week she decided to start blowing bubbles in her bath tub. Her favorite game is chasing mommy and daddy down the hallway after a diaper change or bathtime.

She makes us laugh, cry and shake our heads each and every day...

And we wouldn't have it any other way.

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

Peyton Kathryn Lauver birth story

As Paul Harvey has said: And now, the rest of the story...six weeks later!
When I went in for my 40 week appointment on Monday Nov 28th I never in a million years expected to be watching my daughter snuggling skin-to-skin with her daddy at home 48 hours later.
Dr. Freeman checked me at my 40 week appointment and I was at 2.5/3 centimeters dilated and still 50% effaced. Since there was good progress we sent an induction date for Friday December 2nd at 8am. I left after giving my doctor a hug, bidding the receptionist adieu and laughing when she said "you'll probably go into labor tonight". I was feeling satisfied and already planning my last few days of pregnancy.
After a lunch date with Sally McConnell and a bank visit I called Bobby and we called the moms with the news. When I arrived home Bobby and I put together the new doggy car barrier sent by Bobby's brother Jeff and SIL Tawnya and took the dogs for a test drive. We came home and I fell asleep watching a movie with my husband. I can't even remember now what movie it was!
Two hours later I woke up to a wetness down below that actually had me questioning if I seriously pee'd my pants. Sure enough I had soaked my pantyliner so I decided to lay on my left side for a while and see what happened. Same results 15 minutes later so I sent Bobby to the school to finish up his weekly lesson plans just in case. At 10:45pm I had another leak and decided to call the on call doc (which happened to be my regular doc) to see if this was all a sign of labor!
She said "come on in and get a amniotic fluid test" so I called Bobby with the news and hopped in the shower so I could feel clean again. At 11:30 we packed up the car (again) and headed into the hospital which is 30 miles away. Along the trip I felt pretty silly since I didn't have any real contractions but I did notice a cramping and tightening in my belly a few times during the drive. It was silent the entire car ride because we were definitely sensing this was it! After getting checked in at Labor & Delivery and into a gown and into bed they did the Amnio Fluid Test which came back positive. I got a cervix check (solid 3), my blood drawn and an IV next and that is when I started to feel real tight contractions but they were too infrequent to check.
At this point we called in our labor coach (Lacey) who had to get back in the car and return to Bozeman after just leaving Monday morning to return to school.
At 4am Dr. Freeman checked in and I was still at a solid 3 but having some painful cramping contractions irregularly so we decided to start a Pitocin drip to see if they could get my contraction more regular and start some serious dilation.
Oh boy did that work. From 4am to 8am contractions went from bad to oh baby bad! I was in incredible pain and very uncomfortable in every way. Tried laying on my side, standing, squatting, the birthing ball, the bath tub and no matter what we tried I just felt worse. I kept working thru each contraction until they were back to back with very little break. At that point I begged for the epidural so I could try to get some relief and maybe sleep!
Of course it was time for a shift change so it took an hour and a half for the anesthesiologist to come in but let me tell you he quickly became my favorite doctor! He was wearing blue jeans and a tshirt with sunglasses on his head. He prepped me, taped me up, stuck me and I was completely numb from the waist down in only 10 minutes!!! Ahhhh...
I fell asleep immediately after and slept until 11:30 when my new on call doctor (whom I had never met) came in to check me. Dr. Bradford was a pretty nice man and was very happy to tell me that in 4 hrs I had gone from 4 cm and 80% effaced to 8 cm and 100% effaced. Whoo hoo! Still couldn't feel a darn thing and they said that when it was time to push I would feel it. Boy were they right! Two hours later I started to feel an intense pressure and so I flagged the nurse down and said "it's time!" After 15 minutes of practice pushing it was time to really push! At one point I heard Bobby say "I see the head" and so the nurse brought over a mirror so I could see the full head of hair my baby had. It wasn't too much longer after that when Peyton came out (waving her hand and screaming). Daddy got to catch her on the way out and cut the cord. It took a couple minutes for me to ask: is it a boy or girl? "It's a girl!" Bobby exclaimed! And I started sobbing uncontrollably with joy! A little girl! Peyton Kathryn Lauver weighed in at 7# 15oz and 20in long and scored a 9 on the Apgar scale. She roomed in with us and breast fed for the first time while mommy got some stitches. So perfect and on her due date! She is more punctual than her parents have ever been! They say only 5% of babies arrive on their due date - so glad we are in that 5%!

So that is how Peyton came into the world after 16 hours of labor, 45 minutes of pushing with her parents, her labor coach, and three nurses cheering her on!

Even though Lacey had to go back to Billings for school and work, Peyton had plenty of visitors. Caitlyn Butler stopped by after work, Bridget Lambert came for an overnight, Ann Dickensheets & Kay Lansverk stopped to see her the next day, and Sally McConnell came for hugs. By 4pm we had watched all the necessary videos and had all of her newborn shots and tests so it was time to take Miss Peyton home!

What a ride! More stories to come!

Waiting on the world to Change...

"And we're still waiting ...
Waiting on the world to change."
No baby news is good baby news... right??

We are really in a different kind of holding pattern now at 35 weeks and 3 days gestation with approximately 5 weeks or so left. I know that people have said there is a point in your pregnancy where it all becomes real and we really hit that point about three days ago.

Monday: Doctor's appointment went well... Dr. Freeman says we are "Normal" and coasting into the final weeks of pregnancy (notice I said weeks). So far my blood pressure has been normal. Heart rate: normal. Blood test: normal. Glucose test: normal. Urine test(s): normal. Ultrasounds: normal. I am so darn "normal" that I just can't stand it! This week marks the first of the every week appointment routine and I was lucky to have my mom with me while she was visiting. She got to hear the baby's heartbeat (also normal). Dr. Freeman assured me things were going well and set me up for the next appointment to have a GBS test (Group B Streptococcus) and my first pelvic exam. Doesn't that sound fun? So mom and I left the appointment and did about 4 hours of shopping. Throughout the rest of the night I had some super strong pains in my pelvis and hips which I attributed to walking around for almost five hours straight. Hmmm...

Tuesday: About 6 am I am laying in bed wide awake for no apparent reason. This was especially disheartening considering I was up until after midnight the night before putting the baby nursery together with Bobby and my mom. Shouldn't I be sleeping? I made my routine 6:30 am visit to the bathroom and low and behold... I passed my mucous plug. Of course at first all I saw was pink blood and gunk. I freaked... Bobby freaked... Then, when I managed to get myself under control, I looked in the baby books and found the description for the mucus plug. Whew. Sigh of relief. Then a sense of panic washed over me because, hello, we're still 5 weeks early! I sent Bobby off to school and called the on-call doctor at the hospital leaving a very lengthy message about what was going on. In the meantime I made some toast and drank some water and packed up the hospital bag just in case. After talking to my mom I decided it was time to lay down and rest again while waiting for the doctor to call. I had only been "resting" (read mentally checking off my pre-baby to-do list) for about 30 minutes when I had this sudden urge to throw up. I made it to the bathroom before expelling my breakfast and then broke down in tears. What the heck is going on? Called and left another message for the on-call doctor and my doctor. Soon after I got a call from a friendly nurse who in consultation with the on-call doctor decided I needed to 1) lay back down 2) drink a ton of Gatorade and water 3) let them know if the bleeding persisted or if I kept vomiting. They told me that baby could realistically show up anytime in the next few days or the next couple of weeks. Awesome... Let's hope baby goes the full two weeks!
I had no repeat symptoms the rest of the day (so, no it was not the stomach flu) and managed to get 2 more hours of sleep while my mom cleaned my house and did my laundry.
I love my mom.
That night I had my first full meal and played cards. I finished putting away laundry and went to bed around 11.

Wednesday: Nothing. Nothing. Nothing. I actually got freaked out by baby's lack of movement all morning but sure enough around lunch time baby socked me in the gut a few times signalling to me it was time to eat. I sent mom home exhausted and waited in my clean house for our annual rental inspection (we passed with flying colors thanks to mom and hubby). Bobby and I had a nice dinner and watched a couple of movies.

Thursday: More Nothing. This normalcy sucks. I slept most of the day away and baby happily kick kick kicked away!

So here we sit waiting for our world to change. We know it's going to happen soon (you know sometime between a few days and two weeks).

Checklist for the next few days/weeks:

  • Install car seats
  • Repack hospital bag (I am sure I forgot something)
  • More laundry
  • Find a pediatrician
  • Get someone up to the house to install DSL internet
  • Prep all work related commitments of the possibility I will be out of commission
  • Take another nap

So in a nut shell: life is still blissfully normal... for now!

Baby Bumps!

Mommy & Baby at 12 weeks

Mommy and baby at 30 weeks

Now at 32 1/2 weeks I am in awe of my growing waistline and how when baby moves I can see the movement, the bumps and the rolling around from the outside. I can't believe baby will be here in 8 weeks or so!

And we're having a...

BABY!
This is Bobby's favorite joke/punchline. According to Bobby, it doesn't matter whether we know if we are having a boy or a girl because the baby is still going to poop, eat and cry. This makes me smile.

I should preface this blog with this fact: I do not like surprises.

When we found out we were pregnant in March we decided almost immediately to keep baby's gender a surprise for everyone. That means we don't know what we are having and neither does our family, friends or acquaintances. Only one person knows: our ultrasound technician. And she isn't talking (nor did she write it down anywhere).

We have gotten both "cheers" and "jeers" for this decision but we have stuck to our guns. I even took someone to the one ultrasound scan that Bobby couldn't come too. Yes, I was being super strong in my convictions, and I was positive I would cave and find out without a positive support person.

So at 29 weeks and 5 days (and counting): we still don't know what we are having. We are planning for a gender neutral baby and baby showers. We have decorated the nursery in brown, green and yellow with a Safari theme.

Speaking of showers... I thought it might be nice to post the shower dates and times and locations. But I couldn't post the gift registry lists so here they are:
